Prevention Programmes

Prevention programmes are geared towards preventing or reducing the abuse of substances, the development of positive life skills and the promotion of healthy alternatives. Although SANCA’s primary focus should be on prevention programmes, the growing need for substance abuse treatment demands our attention at this level of intervention. We continue to strive towards achieving a balance between intervention and prevention services.

Our POPPETS Programme focuses not only on substance education, life skills development and healthy lifestyles, but simultaneously strengthens early childhood development and fine motor co-ordination. This successful intervention also empowers educators and development workers through provision of training and support to implement the programme themselves.

Youth Prevention Programme

The Youth Programme focuses on creating awareness, providing substance abuse education and life skills development opportunities as well as promoting positive alternatives and healthy lifestyles. The peer counselling programme continues to be an important and impactful youth-to-youth initiative. We have identified the need to extend our Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Programme to accommodate all other drugs that adversely affect the unborn child.
