Corporate managers training program:

This training programme, which is conducted in a morning session, equips managers and supervisors to identify substance abuse timeously and manage intoxication and dependency in the workplace appropriately. The initiative covers the manifestations of substance abuse and dependency in the workplace, occupational safety risks, statutory obligations and intervention procedures. Role-playing exercises and video clips are utilised in a participative training context. The standard cost per session is roughly R 1,800, although this may vary depending on distances to be travelled, the number of sessions to be conducted and their duration.

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION OF STATEMENTS
Discussion of statements designed to highlight/explore gaps in knowledge or typical misconceptions about alcohol and drinking.

SOCIAL DRINKING AND HIGH RISK DRINKING PATTERNS
Presentation and discussion of criteria which constitute high risk drinking.

TEA

STATUTORY OBLIGATIONS ON EMPLOYEES/EMPLOYERS
Presentation and small group discussion about OHSACT and Labour Relations Act  stipulations and company expectations regarding employee substance abuse related misconduct and dependency.

OVERVIEW OF THE MOST COMMON DRUGS OF ABUSE
A Powerpoint presentation on the appearance, long and short term effects, means of identification and health hazards associated with Opiates, Dagga & Mandrax, Cocaine/Crack and  Methamphetamine.

BREAK

EFFECTIVE INTERVENTION -A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Guidelines to Managers re sound intervention strategies with the suspected dependent employee.

CASESTUDY AND INTERVENTION EXERCISE
Depending on group size and composition this is either done in a roleplay or case discussion

VIDEO
Video clip illustrating more and less effective ways of intervention in employee substance abuse

GENERAL INFORMATION

DURATION
This course is usually presented in a morning session from 09h00 - 13h00.It can,  however be fitted into an afternoon.

GROUPSIZE
Ideal group size is between 12 and 15 with a maximum of 22.The emphasis on group activity makes large groups impractical.

TARGET GROUPS
This course was designed for Managers and first line supervision but can be adapted for groups of more junior or senior level.

AUDIOVISUALS NEEDED
SANCA presenters bring along their own laptop PC’s and data projectors. Whiteboard/Flipchart are welcome additional aids

NOTES
Summarized notes (Eng. and Afr.) on the entire course content is handed out after the course. The course had been designed in such a manner that the notes only serve as a quick reference - no reading is required afterwards because the basic skills are rehearsed during the course.
