Level Two: Advanced motivational interviewing course

For the advanced course entry requirements are as follows:

  • Learners (irrespective of any tertiary qualifications) who
    a)are at present actively involved in counselling and/or
    b) have completed a basic counselling course with a registered organisation
  • Learners who have completed the SANCA Western Cape general training course on Substance Abuse and Dependency (Level 1) will be exempted from attending the first day of the advanced course

Day 1  Dependancy

  • Alcohol and alcoholism
  • The passage of alcohol through the body
  • Short- and long-term effects of alcohol abuse and dependency
  • The development of Alcoholism
  • Overview of main categories of common drugs of abuse
  • Long- and short-term effects of various drugs
  • Dependency and withdrawal

Day 2  The Model of Change and Motivational Interviewing

  • Substance abuse and the different stages of readiness for change
  • Principles of Motivational Interviewing
  • Strategies used in Motivational Interviewing
  • Recognising and dealing with obstacles in building motivation for change
  • Strategies for building motivation for change
  • Techniques for dealing with resistance
  • Techniques in eliciting self-motivational statements
  • The tasks of the counsellor in the stages of change

Day 3  The Model of Change and Motivational Interviewing

  • The elements of assessment
  • Various treatment options for the substance abuser
  • Different types of withdrawal and management techniques
  • Relapse: Cues and Triggers and how they work
  • Types of relapse and how to deal with each
