Training status

The Level 1 course has been submitted to the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority HWSETA for accreditation. In view of this, SANCA Western Cape shall only issue a CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE to learners who have attended for the full duration of the course.

Upon accreditation of the course, learners who have completed the course shall have the opportunity to be assessed. The names of candidates who are pronounced competent by an independent assessor shall be forwarded to the Education and Training Qualifications Authority (ETQA) of HWSETA to apply for a certificate of competence.

Application for the accreditation of the advanced course will be submitted in due course.

Boundaries of competency and functioning of candidates

Learners should take note that a certificate of attendance of these courses under no circumstances equips or entitles them to undertake any diagnosis of substance abuse related disorders, conduct assessments or provide ongoing counselling, initiate and facilitate support or therapeutic groups or engage in any activity or correspondence which may convey the impression that they are suitably qualified or skilled to do so. Candidates who have completed this course should be able to apply their skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • To identify whether substance abuse/dependency or substance abuse related problems exist using appropriate screening tools
  • To motivate the substance abuser and/or family members to seek assistance
  • To motivate the substance abuser and/or family members to change current destructive behaviour patterns
  • To conduct follow-up visits or make telephonic contact with clients during the treatment process to provide motivation and emotional support
  • To advise family members/substance abusers on available intervention resources in the area and to facilitate contact between the client and the resource
  • To co-facilitate support groups for substance abuse and/or families under the guidance of an organisation or resource.
