SANCA Structure (Western Cape)

Registered organisations subscribing to the National Management Board’s mission and objectives may apply for full SANCA membership. Once an organisation complies with the criteria for full membership, it may operate under the registered name of SANCA. A local constitution ensures that each local organisation operates autonomously and is managed by an elected board of volunteers who oversee the governance of the organisation, its financial management, the appointment of the director and the rendering of standardised services by fully qualified staff.

The SANCA National Constitution also makes provision for two other categories of membership: satellite services and emerging organisations. Both these categories of membership are for services that do not meet the full membership criteria. Satellite membership is afforded to services that are directly linked to a SANCA member organisation while emerging organisation status is assigned to an independent service that is in the process of developing and working towards registration as a Non-Profit Organisation.

SANCA Western Cape’s structure

SANCA Western Cape’s constitution makes provision for various categories of membership:

  • Full membership of the organisation, which is open to all people with a vested interest in substance abuse and in terms of which an annual membership subscription fee is payable,
  • Approved individuals who have rendered meritorious service to the organisation may be nominated for honorary membership,
  • Corporate membership for organisations, institutions and representatives from the corporate sector,
  • Organisations with similar aims and objectives as those of SANCA, which may apply for associated membership.

The organisation is governed by a Management Board comprising not more than twelve members. This Board:

  • Acts on behalf of SANCA Western Cape and has full powers to manage the affairs of the organisation and to promote its objectives by all constitutional means,
  • Assists the organisation with expert knowledge and advice,
  • Appoints the director and assistant director,
  • Formulates policies, standards and guidelines for the promotion of the aims and objectives of the organisation,
  • Appoints and dismisses staff as determined by the conditions of service,
  • Conducts annual reviews and determines remuneration for services rendered in accordance with the annual budget,
  • Evaluates posts and the performance of staff.

These powers and functions may be delegated to the Management Committee.
